18 September 1970: Jimi Hendrix, guitar god, died in London. The details surrounding his passing are quite sketchy, with allegations of theft, medical malpractice, and even murder. He was 27, which is also the age at which Robert Johnson, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, and just this year, Amy Winehouse, died. Curse or no, it's way too soon for such talented people. Here he is setting his guitar on fire at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, looking like a high priest of awesomeness.
18 September 1985: David Letterman delivered his first Top Ten list. There have been a lot of classics, but here's one of my favorites.
Just Plain Weird
18 September 1975: Patty Hearst was arrested by the FBI for her part in a bank robbery carried out by the Symbionese Liberation Army--the radical organization that had kidnapped her the previous year. She went on to appear in a slew of John Waters films, including my favorite, Cry Baby, and played a, heh, heiress who (spoiler alert, I guess) fakes her own kidnapping in season three of Veronica Mars. There's also a really good novel called American Woman by Susan Choi that has a character based on Hearst's story.
