Adaptation Angst: The Invention of Hugo Cabret
I fell in love with this Caldecott Medal-winning novel hard and fast, and not just because I have a thing for books marketed to individuals half my age or younger. Brian Selznik wrote and illustrated a gorgeous novel that happens to hit me where I live. Historical-fiction? Check. Steampunky clocks and automata? Check. Paris? Yep. So I was, shall we say, distressed, when I heard that Martin Scorsese was making a film based on the book . . . just called Hugo . . . in 3D. *Shudder.* But according to Salon's Andrew O'Hehir, who saw an unfinished cut at the New York Film Festival, the flick owns. And it does have Chloe Grace Moretz and Sacha Baron Cohen in the cast. I'm lowering my angst level from a 7 to a 4.
