Today in Pop Culture History

Downer:
8 December 1980: John Lennon was shot to death outside his apartment in New York City. Lennon was not only a pioneering musician and pop culture icon, but also a witty and unrelenting advocate for peace and social justice. He is still missed and mourned, at least by this Beatles fan.

Upper:
8 December 1949: "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" premiered on Broadway, starring Carol Channing, who is still alive and fabulous at 90. The play was adapted into a film in 1953 directed by Howard Hawks, and starring Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe. Monroe's rendition of "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" is timeless, yes?

Oh, and does that dress look familiar?

It should.
