Bunheads

ABC Family's Bunheads was a perfect storm of love for me.  I love shows about dancing, I love Sutton Foster and I love show creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino (creator of Gilmore Girls).  After watching the pilot episode I didn't fall in love with it but there's some potential.

The story is, Foster's character, Michelle, is a struggling Vegas showgirl who can't get real dance jobs.  She marries a sweet fan of hers, Hubbell (played by Alan Ruck), at a very low point in her life.  He whisks her off to his sleepy town by the sea that doesn't even have a movie theater!  Hubbell lives with his mother, Fanny (played by Kelly Bishop), who runs the local dance studio.  Michelle admits to both Hubbell and Fanny that she doesn't love him but there's definitely potential. Heh, sounds familiar.  Michelle connects with four of Fanny's advanced ballet students.  Then there was a big twist at the end, which ensured that I'd be tuning in again.

Foster did well with AS-P's trademark lightening quick speech.  Also, as a Broadway star she is a pro at mugging for the audience.  The problem is that she still seems to be acting for the back of the theater and maybe needs to tone it down a bit.  Bishop, another actress who started on Broadway, is perfect as mother-in-law Fanny.  She was incredible on Gilmore Girls and will be just as great on this.

The four girls are cute if not a bit stereotypical:
We have the dancer with pure talent but no love for dance, Sasha (far left).  Then there's Ginny, aka Megan Hilty Jr. (2nd from left), who complains a lot about her breast size.  Melanie (3rd from left) hasn't been assigned a personality yet so she's still a bit of a mystery.  On the right is Boo.  Boo has the wrong body for a ballet dancer but possesses all the passion and heart.

I'll be interested in seeing how the show pans out.  I'm just glad I'm getting to watch three shows about dance right now.  So You Think You Can Dance is back in full swing.  Breaking Pointe on CW, a reality show following a ballet company in Utah, has been pretty cool so far.  I love relationship drama set in the dance world!  It's like they turned Center Stage into a reality TV show!
